From George Hoefer's liner notes: "The band was organized in mid-1960 with an avowed purpose of presenting modern music with a danceable beat. All of the members were recruited from the show bands playing the various night clubs and hotels in Las Vegas, Nevada.

At first it was a rehearsal band with the sidemen welcoming the opportunity to get together and play scores featuring modern jazz voicings, individual solos and a strong rhythmic beat. Their sessions took place during off-hours from regular duties involving the performance of accompaniment music for singing acts, vaudeville sketches and comedians; it was "work" for their own pleasure and they spoke of themselves as the Las Vegas "Kicks" band."

Cook's 15-piece band won the American Federation of Musicians "Best New Dance Band of 1960" contest on November 22, 1960. The prizes included this recording session, a national tour, $20,000 in new instruments and an engagement at the Flamingo Hotel.

Though "recorded in Las Vegas during his first engagement at the Riviera," this does not appear to be a live performance. The Hammond X-77 was brought in at McLain's request and was one of only two in the state of Nevada at the time.
